Fighting giraffes

In South Luangwa National Park, two bull Thornicroft giraffes fight for dominance (and mating rights) in a loosely-knit herd.

The first image shows the rivals with a much smaller female, in preliminary manoeuvres. During the fight, they strike each other with massive blows of head and neck. At the end, the victor examines a leg wound while his rival retreats, perhaps to challenge another day-- actual fights are fairly rare. Put the cursor on an image to pause the slideshow
