Burrow for the future

In outback South Australia, a diminutive painted dragon toils in the summer heat for the survival of her species.

She spends hours digging a burrow on a salt lake's shore, laying her eggs in the red sandy depths, then concealing her work before dashing back into the bush. She'll have nothing more to do with the raising of her young after they hatch and emerge from the ground. Mouse-over an image to pause the slideshow
